General Health Measures
In all matters of health, CBE takes direction from Alberta Education and Alberta Health Services. Find out how you can reduce the spread and lessen the impact of illness in school communities.
Routine Immunizations
The CBE supports the AHS school-based immunization program.
It is important that you call the school if your child is absent or arriving late. Please report all absences to the Attendance Line at 403-777-6180 ext. 1.
Illness
If your child is ill, please keep them at home until they are well enough to participate in all school activities. If your child becomes ill during the school day, we will contact you and you will be expected to arrange for your child to be picked up as soon as possible.
Student Health
A Student Health Plan form was included in every child’s School Opening Package, and is also available in the office and online. If your child has a health concern or medical condition that may impact their time at Collingwood School, please complete the health plan form. Where there is a significant health concern that may require medication or other emergency responses, it is required that a Student Health Emergency Response Protocol form be filled out at the beginning of the school year. Note: Medical forms are required to be filled out annually for all children who are taking any form of medicine at school. Parents of children who have an EpiPen as part of their emergency response should contact the office immediately to fill out these forms and provide their child with an EpiPen to be kept on their person. Please also make sure your child’s teacher is aware of any such allergies or medical concerns immediately via phone call or email.
Allergies
Collingwood is an “allergy aware” school and as a staff we work with you to keep our students safe throughout their school day. Several of our students have food allergies and we need to know about this in order to provide a safe environment for all students. Please avoid sending food/snacks with nuts of any kind. As part of our health education, teachers and lunchroom supervisors remind their students to wash their hands after using the washroom and prior to eating as part of proper hygiene. Hand sanitizer is also available in the classroom and the lunchrooms.
Injuries at School
Should your child be injured at school the following procedures will be followed:
- A school staff member will take action to ensure the safety of the student and administer minor first aid
- The parent or guardian will be telephoned and appraised of the situation and asked, if necessary, to come to school, and advise us of their wishes regarding their child’s injury
- If we are unable to contact the parent/guardian or emergency contact person, an administrator will decide if emergency treatment is necessary
- If emergency treatment appears to be necessary, the child will be transported to a Hospital, at the parents’ / guardians’ expense. Parents/guardians will be contacted as soon as possible.
Public Health Nurse & Health Issues
It is important for you to inform your child’s teacher of any health condition affecting your child that may arise. Medications to be taken by or administered to students during the school hours require a signed release form to be on file in the office. Disease germs spread quickly through contact with other children in school. The following guidelines are offered:
Department of Health Regulations – Isolation Periods
- Chicken Pox as soon as child feels well enough to participate normally in all activities, regardless of how long the rash has been present
- Pink Eye 24 hours after starting appropriate antibiotic treatment, or until free of symptoms
- Impetigo 24 hours after starting appropriate antibiotic treatment
- Whooping Cough exclude child for 3 weeks from the onset of the persistent cough OR until treated 5 days with an antibiotic
Lice
There may be times during the school year when we have cases of head lice.
If your child has head lice, please contact the school and let us know. If your child has been exposed to lice at school we will notify you.
As a precaution, we ask all parents to check their child’s head frequently for a few weeks after any exposure. You can find more information on lice from myhealth.alberta.ca.
