Learning Commons at the CBE

Today’s learners cannot imagine life without the internet and supporting technology. The concept of the traditional library is changing to include technology, online tools and spaces for collaboration and exploration.

School Literary Materials Selection

Related to Ministerial Order (#034/2025), Standards for the Selection, Availability, and Access of School Library Materials, CBE has published an administrative regulation AR3051: School Literary Materials Selection. Families and community members can request a review or reconsideration of a literary resource in a school's learning commons by completing the School Library Materials Reconsideration Challenge Request through their local school.

CBE also has an eLibrary online tool available to families, students and staff, which is an online catalogue for all CBE school libraries with detailed information on books, DVD’s and other resources that are available to borrow.

Additionally, parents and legal guardians are welcome to review classroom library collections by contacting your child's school.

Borrowing Rules

Students are responsible for borrowed materials whether they are used at school or in the home. If a student damages or loses a book, he/she will be responsible for replacement charges.

  • In order to take books home, students should have a bag.
  • There are no fines. However, if books are continually overdue, there will be borrowing restrictions.
  • Students may sign out books for a one-week period.
  • Most reference books are not allowed out of the library.
  • Parents are encouraged to take an interest in the kinds of books their children bring home. Parental assistance is also required in making sure that books are returned on the due date and in impressing upon the children the importance of this requirement.

Little Free Library

Students and staff at Senator Patrick Burns School built and donated a “Little Free Library” to Collingwood School. The library has been installed near the steps leading up to the school near the playground. Students and families are free to take a book or leave a gently used book if you would like. The library could use a few more novels and books for our older students.
