Collingwood School became an International Spanish Academy in 2001. We provide educational programming to students from Kindergarten to Grade 5 in our Spanish Bilingual programs. We support an inquiry-based approach: We encourage our students to ask significant and important questions, and to seek answers relevant to their curiosities.

School Mission

At Collingwood School, it is the responsibility of all staff, students, parents and the community to understand, support, promote and advance the quality of learning in a safe and positive learning environment. We work towards supporting the CBE Mission Statement: " Each student in keeping with their individual abilities and gifts, will complete high school with a foundation of learning necessary to thrive in life, work and continued learning" in a bilingual setting.

What Makes Collingwood School Unique?

The school community is a wonderful environment for students to experience what it means to be a global citizen. Our children are involved in a number of activities related to their learning, through which they meet people from around the world, and through which they participate as volunteers, contributors, and learners who come to understand their presence and potential impact in a global community.

We are very fortunate to have teachers on our faculty who represent diverse cultures from throughout the Spanish speaking world. The CBE has a Memorandum of Understanding with Spain, and we are pleased to have several visiting teachers from that country. In addition, we have teachers from Cuba, Chile, Mexico, Nicaragua, Guatemala and Venezuela. Our teachers are bilingual, trilingual, and in some cases, quadrilingual. Many have teaching experience in three countries or more.

School Development Plan

Each year, our school prepares a development plan with input from teachers, school staff, students and parents. We review many sources of data, including report cards, provincial achievement test results and school surveys. Based on this information, we create our plan identifying targeted areas for growth. Our school development plan is not meant to represent all of the work that takes place in our school, but rather it focuses on specific areas for improvement.

School Improvement Results Report

Our school also prepares a results plan, which looks at our previous school year. It shows our students’ achievement and progress in meeting the goals and outcomes as set out by the CBE and Alberta Education, outlines some of the highlights of our school development plan and gives an overview of our school. You can look on the CBE website for system-wide results.
