Our Programs
Regular Program at the CBE
Even though most of our schools offer a regular program, no two are quite the same. All schools teach according to Alberta Education’s mandated curriculum, however a school’s focus, optional courses and school activities are as unique as every school.
International Spanish Academy
¿Quiénes somos? Our school is an International Spanish Academy! The International Spanish Academy program is an educational initiative of the Ministry of Education of Spain that complements the Calgary Board of Education's vibrant Spanish Bilingual Program by connecting schools from across Alberta and the United States. It provides students with opportunities to acquire and maintain language skills in Spanish and English and develop global citizenship through rich intercultural encounters.

The Seven Grandfather Teachings
The Seven Grandfather Teachings are used as a moral stepping stone and cultural foundation in many Indigenous communities from coast to coast. At Escuela Collingwood, we have integrated the seven animals and their teachings into our learning throughout the year to develop students' understanding of resiliency through the lens of Courage, Respect, Honesty, Love, Humility, Wisdom and Truth. Students are exposed to a variety of learning opportunities about the 7 teachings, such as multi-media art, journal reflections, storytelling and the unique experience of listening to an Indigenous Knowledge Keeper, Elder Eagle Speaker. Collaboratively, our faculty is developing our understanding and improving our pedagogical approach to Indigenous perspectives with the support of these teachings.
Homework Guidelines
Homework can consist of a variety of activities, most of which are initiated by the school or the home. As a general guideline we recommend 15 minutes for younger children increasing to 30 minutes for older children.
Home study activities may consist of:
- Reading for research and/or pleasure with someone or alone
- Completion of school assignments
- Review and study of school or interest topics and subject material such as daily notes from specific lessons
- Special projects such as Science experiments or internet research
- Educationally related activities with parents such as model designing or building
- Family story writing
- Shared/paired reading activities
- Map reading and event planning (i.e., have your child be in charge of planning family outings such as the Glenbow Museum or Science Centre, subject matter research, how much it costs per person, planning for lunch, or research an animal before going to the Zoo or Butterfield Acres.)
- Bake with your child to support measurement as well as nutrition.
- Scrap booking activities, along with crafts, provide opportunities for developing creativity, organizational and language skills.
If you wish to have more details regarding homework, please contact your child’s teacher.
