Collingwood Weekly Update April 13 - 17, 2026
Message from Interim Principal – Rick Petrowitsch
Thank you to all the parents who attended our Parent School Council meeting on Wednesday. It was great to have so many parents, both in-person and online. Unfortunately, there was a miscommunication regarding our Trustee visit. Laura Hack will attend the next meeting on May 13, 2026.
Smart Devices
We continue to have issues with Smart Watches and cell phones. Students are using Smart Watches to communicate with other students as well as parents. This practice contravenes the Alberta Education policy, CBE Policy with Mobile Devices, as well as the school’s Mobile Device policy. We are requesting, one last time, that Smart Watches and cell phones be left at home or powered off before entering the school. They can be powered on once again after the students leave the school building. Any mobile device brought to school is NOT the responsibility of the school.
Weather - Bikes to School
As the weather warms up (hopefully soon), students ride their bikes to school. Please make sure the bikes are locked up in the bicycle rack on the south side of the school. Again, we cannot be responsible for any bikes stolen or damaged.
Field Trip Fees
With many field trips in progress or planned, we would like to remind parents to please go online to their MyCBE account and pay the required fees. The school cannot cover unpaid field trip fees. If there is a financial concern, please call the school and speak to an Administrator.
Spring Concert Thank You!
Thank you. Spring Concerts featuring Kindergarten, Grade 1, and Grade 2 classes!
Spanish for Parents – Level 1
Chinook Learning Services is offering the upcoming Spanish for Parents - Level 1 class at Dalhousie School. Learning Spanish can be both easy and fun. This beginning-level course will help parents of bilingual Spanish students learn or refresh their Spanish language skills. Parents will become more comfortable interacting with their children in Spanish, build their network of bilingual parents, and become familiar with the school environment.
- Spanish for Parents – Level 1 (April 14 – June 9, 2026)
Traffic Safety
For the safety of all our students and families, we ask that everyone respect the law in the school zone. This means no jaywalking, not doing U-turns, and respecting the speed limit. The school does not have any authority over drivers on the streets. Let’s use caution over convenience.
If families witness poor driver and pedestrian behavior, please complete a police service report: https://www.calgary.ca/cps/traffic/traffic-reporting.html
Read-A-Thon
Read-A-Thon – April 6 – May 6, 2026
The Collingwood School Parent Association is raising funds for bottle-filling water fountains and new books – and we need your help!
From April 6 to May 6, students can participate in the Escuela Collingwood School Read-a-thon to help raise funds for these important additions. These are valuable resources that will benefit all students now and for years to come.
Students can ask for sponsors who pledge to support their reading—anywhere from 15–30 minutes per day throughout the Read-a-thon. Donations of any amount are appreciated and will go directly toward covering the costs of the water fountains and books.
All participating students will be entered into a prize draw!
Prizes include: Stampeders game day tickets, Flames youth jersey, Flames water bottle, Collingwood apparel, Slurpee’s and much more. We will also award a pizza party to the classes that raises the most funds, along with additional classroom incentives, perhaps extra recess, pajama day and the chance to get to be the ‘Principal’ for a day. Students will be asked to track their daily reading throughout the event.
How to participate:
- Go to the Escuela Collingwood Read-a-thon page
- Click on Fundraise
- Select your child’s classroom team (grade and teacher name).
- Click fundraise then Join a Team. Add your child’s name (and a photo if you wish)
- Set a fundraising goal—there is no minimum!
Everyone who participates will be entered into the prize draw.
Motivational Magic Performance - April 15, 2026:
Collingwood School is proud to invite Steve Harmer and his Motivational Magic Performance at 1:15PM for students.
Steve Harmer is a Professional Educator (former principal) and Professional Magician and entertainer.
Through the use of magic, juggling, comedy, music and storytelling, Steve delivers meaningful messages that inspire, educate and motivate children and adults. This program is called "Brilliant and Resilient." This is a presentation for the students.
We are grateful to the Collingwood School Parent Association for their donation to help off-set the cost of this event.
