Solar Eclipse on Monday April 8

On Monday, April 8,  a partial solar eclipse will be visible in Calgary. The solar event will begin just before noon and conclude by 2:00 p.m., with the maximum coverage occurring at 12:43 p.m.

We know that this provides a unique learning experience for students and staff in our schools; however, there can be serious impacts to vision as a result of viewing the eclipse in an unsafe manner.

At Collingwood School, all teachers will be discussing the solar eclipse with their classes and highlighting the dangers of looking at the sun during an eclipse. There will be an indoor lunch and lunch recess on Monday, April 8th. All shades will be pulled down in classrooms between 11:50 and 2:00PM and students will not be allowed outside at this time.

As an additional precaution for Afternoon Kindergarten students, they may enter the school through the basement kindergarten doors, immediately upon arrival as early as 11:40 AM and proceed directly to their classroom where they will be supervised.

More information about the eclipse and eye safety can be found on the NASA website or from the Canadian Association of Optometrists.

If you have further questions, please contact the school office.

Gymnastics Residency/ Mission Impossible

It has been exciting to watch children develop their skills during our gymnastics residency this past week. The residency will continue all this week. We are grateful that we are able to offer this residency at no cost to parents, thanks to the financial support of the Collingwood Parent Association. Next week, Sr. Vargas’s grade 5 class will be designing a Mission Impossible Obstacle Course. For the next two weeks,  please ensure your children wear comfortable clothes that they can move and roll in and that they refrain from wearing dangling jewelry.

Bee Logo Contest 2024

We are launching another Bee Logo Contest to choose the label for the honey we will be harvesting in the fall. Students are invited to submit their designs by Monday, April 8 and then we will choose a winner as a school.

Dallas Arcand Presentation April 10

Collingwood School is excited to welcome Dallas Arcand on Wednesday April 10. Dallas is a 3x world Champion Hoop dancer, storyteller and musician. He specializes in education and healing workshops, anti-bullying and Hoop Dance 101. He is from the Alexander First Nation in Northern Alberta. We are grateful to be able to offer this presentation at no cost to Collingwood Families thanks to the Collingwood Parent Association.

Volunteers Needed

Thank you to the many volunteers who came to stamp and tape books over the past few weeks.  We are about halfway through this major project. We welcome any parents who can come to school and continue to help us with this project this week. No volunteer clearance or sign up is required, just come by the school to help.

Class Placement

Creating balanced classes is an involved process that we take very seriously at Collingwood School. Many factors are considered, including teaching and learning styles, social needs,  group dynamics, class size, etc. The teachers from the current grade know the children very well and they create the lists for the following year. We appreciate that families trust us to make the best possible placement for your children. The school will make every effort to ensure that every child has a classmate they are familiar with and who they can learn well with in their class. Teachers will be asking students for a list of children they work well with, who they would like to be in their class next year. If families would like to share something about their child's learning style or needs that you feel the school is not already aware of, then please send an email to your child’s teacher and cc Collingwood@cbe.ab.ca. by Friday, April 26Emails received after this date will not be considered. Please remember that requesting a particular teacher is not the purpose for this communication. All of the above factors will be considered as we make classes. We cannot guarantee that we will be able to honor student or family requests.

Feria del Libro – Books Wanted!

We will be holding a “Feria del Libro” or Book Fair from April 24-26. For this event, students will be asked to donate gently used books to the school. All of the books will be on display in the gym during the Feria del Libro. Students who donate two books or more will have the opportunity to take home two books. All students will receive 1 book whether they donate any books or not. At the end of the book fair, students may have the opportunity to choose additional books. Students may bring books in to the classrooms starting Monday, April 15No baby books please.

Feria del Libro – Volunteers needed

Volunteers will be needed to help organize the books and run the book fair the week of April 22-26. A sign-up link will be sent out later this week.

Abejas Bilingues de Collingwood

As the weather warms up and our bees are more active, we will have more opportunities for students to observe and learn about bees, pollination and beekeeping from school staff and our beekeeping partners at Alveole. This exposure to these fascinating creatures makes environmental learning more real and relevant for our students. Be sure to check out the blog at the Collingwood MyHive link: https://myhive.alveole.buzz/calgary-board-of-education-collingwood-school.

We are grateful to the Collingwood Parent Association for their financial support for this exciting endeavour. Funding for this project also came from grants and honey sales.

School Fees

There is a fee for all in-school and out of school field trips. These field trips are very popular and valuable learning experiences for students. Fees are uploaded to your MyCBE account throughout the school year. Please take a moment to log on to your MYCBE account to check if you have outstanding school fees. We need your support by paying these fees so that we may continue to offer these enrichment opportunities for students.

Clothing Donation

As the weather warms up and our playground gets wet and muddy we are in need of more pants, and socks for grade 3, 4 and 5.  Many students are coming to the office for a change of clothing.
