Hats on for Mental Health – May 7
The Canadian Mental Health Organization promotes Hats On! for Mental Health Day on May 7. Canadians are invited to wear a hat to raise awareness of the importance of good mental health. Collingwood students and staff are invited to wear a hat to school on the May 7 to promote awareness about the importance of mental health. Part of the spirit of this day is to remove the stigma associated with mental illness.

Collingwood School Move-a-Thon
Thank for the overwhelming response to the announcement of the Collingwood School Move-a-thon!
We have already raised over $7,000 towards the cost of the gagaball pit, and we are increasing our fundraising goal to $12,000, which would exceed the total we raised in last year's bike-a-thon.
It is not too late to participate! All students who participate will be entered into a prize draw. For the month of May, all students can participate in the Escuela Collingwood School Move-a-thon to raise funds towards the cost of the gagaball pit - a large, permanent outdoor enclosure used for a popular, active, handball game.
Donors can sponsor a student who pledges to engage in 30 minutes of physical activity per day for the duration of the move-a-thon. Donations large or small will all go to the Collingwood School Parent Association in support of the construction costs.
Go to the Escuela Collingwood Move-a-thon page. Click on Fundraise. Then click on Join a Team. Add your child’s name and, if you wish, a photo or other image.
Thank you for participating. ¡Muévanse!
Planning for 2025-26 School Year
We have received our budget and are in the midst of planning for the 2025-26 School Year. Multiple factors are considered as we try to create balanced classes that will meet all the students’ needs. We strive to allocate the budget to maintain low class sizes while also providing supports for children across the school. We will be having the following configuration of classes for the 2025-26 school year.
Kindergarten: 2 am classes and 1 pm class
Grade 1: 4 classes
Grade 2: 4 classes
Grade 3: 4 classes
Grade: 3 classes
Grade 5: 3 classes
Grade 6: 3 classes
In order to facilitate this classroom configuration, given the number of rooms available, two teachers will team-teach in one large grade 1 classroom. Two teachers will also team-teach in one large grade 3 classroom. Team teaching is occurring in multiple classrooms across the Calgary Board of Education and has occurred in previous years at Collingwood School. In order for team teaching to work, teachers need to have complimentary teaching styles and be excited about the opportunity to teach together. That is the case for the teachers who have volunteered for this teaching assignment at Collingwood. We also need to be mindful of individual student learning needs as we make classes and deploy Educational and School Assistant support. We will be discussing school organization in more detail at our next school council meeting on May 14. Any questions about the 2025-26 school organization may be directed to school administration.
Class Placement
Creating balanced classes is an involved process that we take very seriously at Collingwood School. Many factors are considered, including teaching and learning styles, social needs, group dynamics, class size, etc. The teachers from the current grade know the children very well and they create the lists for the following year. We appreciate that families trust us to make the best possible placement for your children. The school will make every effort to ensure that every child has a classmate they are familiar with and who they can learn well with in their class. This year, teachers will not be asking students for a list of children they would like to be in their class next year.
Please remember that requesting a particular teacher is not the purpose for this communication. All of the above factors will be considered as we make classes. We cannot guarantee that we will be able to honor student or family requests.
If families would like to share something about their child's learning style or needs that you feel the school is not already aware of, then please complete the Class Placement Form by Friday May 9, 2025. Requests received after this date will not be considered.

Volunteer with a Truck Needed
We would like to put more mulch on the beds around the school to keep down weeds and help with water retention. Free mulch is available at the East Calgary landfill and if one of our families with a truck would be willing to pick up a truckload and deliver it to the school we would greatly appreciate it. If you can assist us, please contact the school.
Swimming Volunteers
We need your help! The grade 1,2 and Sra. Navarro's Kindergarten classes will be going swimming May 26 -29, and we need several volunteers to help supervise on this trip. We particularly need male volunteers to help in the changerooms. Please consider volunteering even if your child is not swimming. Details are at the link below.

Spring Sports
All winter, many students have enjoyed playing hockey outside on the field. With the arrival of Spring we are transitioning the use of the nets and outdoor field spaces to soccer and other sports. We ask that families no longer send hockey sticks and equipment to school.
My First Ride | Registration is Now Open for My 1st Ride Orientation Program
The Calgary Board of Education, along with our partners, are pleased to offer a school bus orientation program called My 1st Ride. This program is designed to familiarize students with the experience of taking the yellow bus to and from school on a regular basis.
The orientation is aimed at first-time riders, students with special transportation needs and older students who are using transportation for the first time. Each group is offered an orientation session to meet their diverse needs.
The orientation consists of a 20-minute presentation followed by a short ride on a school bus. Each new rider will be given a certificate of completion.

Measles Information
The following information is being shared with CBE families on behalf of Alberta Health Services:
Traffic Safety
For the safety of all our students and families, we ask that everyone respect the law in the school zone, this means no jaywalking, no doing u-turns and respecting the speed limit. If families witness poor driver and pedestrian behavior, please complete a police service report.
Kindergarten Registration is now open
We held a lottery on February 12 and any registrations submitted after that date are placed on a wait list.
Children may start Kindergarten in the fall of 2025 if they turn 5 years old on or before December 31, 2025. Children must start school if they are six years of age or older on September 1.
There is no requirement for students to have prior exposure to Spanish to begin in Kindergarten or in September of their Grade 1 year. Parents are also not expected to speak Spanish.
Grade 1 Registration
All current Collingwood Kindergarten families, who live in our catchment area, and where at last one parent is not of the Catholic faith, are automatically registered in our grade one program. These families do not need to submit a new grade 1 registration form.
Commercial Messages
From time to time, the school sends out messages with commercial content, such as fun lunch notices, ordering pictures or special fundraisers. In order to receive these emails families need to subscribe to receive commercial messages from the school.
Math Quest
Embark on a math quest. Explore the library completing fun numeracy challenges that support what you learn in school. Caregivers are invited to stay and play.
STEM Explorers: Best Frenemies
All about wasps. We love to hate wasps, but these bugs are important to the ecosystem. We’ll discuss together and learn more!
WordPlay
Reading is necessary to help strengthen all learning. Children in Grades 1 and 2 can join CanLearn for a 6 week reading program that helps build their foundational reading skills, develops their love of reading and opens the door to their future success at school. CanLearn can be contacted for a pre-assessment 1 week before the series starts.
Fundraisers and Donations
Visit the Fundraisers and Donations page which will provide you with up-to-date information about any Collingwood School fundraisers or Parent Association Fundraisers. It also explains the process the CBE uses for other donations. Please take a few minutes to check out some of the exciting plans of the Collingwood Parent Association.
