Family Picnic

We had a great turnout and beautiful weather for our Family Picnic. Thank you to everyone who was able to attend.

Terry Fox Run

Many schools across Canada and around the world hold a Terry Fox Run in the fall to raise awareness about cancer and cancer research. Collingwood School will hold our Terry Fox run on Monday, September 16 at 9:50 AM for am kindergarten students and 1:00 PM for pm kindergarten and grade 1-5 students. Families are encouraged to donate online to the Terry Fox Foundation for Cancer Research. Students and staff will be running and walking around the school field. Families are welcome to come and watch or participate. In 2023 we raised $2,273.75 and our goal for this year is $2,390.00.

Lockdown Drill

To ensure that the school community knows what to do in case of emergency we will be holding our first lockdown drill on September 17 in the morning. This drill is being held to prepare in the event of a threat outside or inside the school. This could be a coyote on the school field or other threatening situation. We will announce the lockdown over the PA system and students will gather quietly in a secure location in the class. We have the support of the Calgary Police Service to complete these drills. The officer opens the classroom doors and has a conversation with classes at the conclusion of the drill. If you feel that your child may require additional support during the lockdown practice, please communicate with your child’s teacher.

Fun Lunch

Our first Fun Lunch of the year will be Subway on September 19 and a reminder that the deadline to order will be Sept. 14 at midnight. Please refer to the fun lunch email for more details.

As a reminder, the children do need a snack for snack time and we are a litter free school, so kids will be asked to bring home all leftovers and garbage from the fun lunch.  Parents may wish to send a bag to contain any drips and help children with this!

Volunteer Sign Up

In order for fun lunches to be a success, we rely on volunteers to help check and distribute the meals (kids are always very excited to see you!) Please consider signing up to help using this link.

Healthy Start to School

We are noticing an increasing of number of students coming to school with flu symptoms, such as fever or vomiting. For your child’s sake, and the safety of the entire school community, please keep your children at home when they are ill. Alberta Health provides the following health safety advice.

  • if possible, avoid close contact with people who are sick;
  • wash hands frequently with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds or use alcohol-based hand sanitizer;
  • cover your cough;
  • avoid touching eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands; and
  • clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces and items at home, especially when someone in your home is sick.

Alberta Health Services has a respiratory assessment tool to provide Albertans with guidance to manage a wide range of respiratory illnesses, and provide advice on caring for symptoms at home, and when to seek additional care.

Walking, Driving and the Drop Off Loop

When walking your children to and from school please walk through the playground rather than along the sidewalk in front of the drop off loop. This allows traffic to flow smoothly through the loop. If you are driving through the drop off loop, do not exit your vehicle. Please also be aware that you may be fined or ticketed for parking in the St. Francis Parking Lot.

Personal Mobile Devices

Please note that students are not allowed to use personal mobile devices such as cell phones or smart watches on school grounds unless approved by the teacher for a specific school project. If students bring a cell phone to school it should be kept in their backpack.

Conference Booking

Booking for Parent Teacher Conferences will open on Sept. 21 at 9:00 AM. Further details will follow. Please also watch for an email from your child’s teacher with a questionnaire about your child’s learning that we need you to complete prior to conferences.
