Conference Booking

Booking for Parent Teacher Conferences is now open. Please be sure to book a meeting with your child’s teacher. The intent of these initial conferences is for parents to share information with the teacher about your child and their learning needs.  Please also watch for an email from your child’s teacher with a questionnaire about your child’s learning that we need you to complete prior to conferences.

If families would like to meet with our music teacher, Sra. Heath, no booking is required, simply stop by the music room. Likewise, if you would like to meet with our two resource teachers, Sra. Hamilton or Sra. Beltran, stop by rooms 17 or 18. These teachers will be providing additional support in literacy and math to students across the school.

Indigenous Performer Miranda Currie – Sept 23 1:00 PM

Northern Indigenous Multi Disciplinary Artist and Children’s Performer Miranda Currie, will be singing original songs and sharing stories with our students on Sept. 23 at 1:00 PM. Her presentation promises to be engaging and entertaining, while also providing important context and learning in the lead up to the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day. AM Kindergarten children are welcome to attend this presentation with their caregivers.

Orange Shirt Day Sept. 25

Collingwood School will be holding our Orange Shirt Day event this Wednesday September 25, not October 1 as previously indicated. Orange Shirt Day is a legacy of the St. Joseph Mission (SJM) residential school commemoration event held in Williams Lake, BC in the spring of 2013. It grew out of Phyllis' story of having her shiny new orange shirt taken away on her first day of school at the Mission, and it has become an opportunity to keep the discussion going on all aspects of residential schools. It is a time for First Nations, local governments, schools and communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come.

At Escuela Collingwood, students are invited to wear an orange shirt to school this Wednesday as part of Orange Shirt Day. If children do not have an orange shirt, parents should not feel any pressure to go out and purchase one, as that is not the intent of this day. Teachers will take some time this week to discuss Orange Shirt Day, the importance of honoring each child and making everyone feel welcome at school.

A Message from the Collingwood School Parent Association

Potluck for Teachers Thursday, September 26, 2024

On Thursday, September 26, 2024, the Collingwood School Council and the Collingwood School Parent Association are pleased to host a pot-luck dinner for the teachers of Collingwood School to thank them for their hard work, and keep them going through a long evening of learning conferences.  This is a tradition that is very much appreciated by teachers, and we hope you can help us keep it going.  If you are able to contribute a dish to the potluck, please sign up here and drop the contribution off by 5 pm on Thursday, September 26, 2024.

Gracias!

Book Fair

During conferences there will be a Scholastic Book Fair in the library. A portion of all sales will help provide additional learning resources for the school library. Multiple payment options are possible at the book fair. A few select items will only be available for cash purchase including honey from our Collingwood bee hive and some gently used Halloween decorations.

Book Fair Volunteers Needed

We need a few more volunteers to help run our book fair. If you can spare a few hours to help out with the book fair, please sign up.

National Day of Truth and Reconciliation – September 30

There are a number of family friendly events across the city for the National Day of Truth and reconciliation on September 30. Details and links are available on the CBE website.

School Council AGM

  • Oct. 9 - 6:30 – 8:00 PM

All families are invited to attend the School Council AGM on October 9 at 6:30 PM. This meeting will be held in person and online. A number of positions will be open on the school council executive and families are encouraged to get involved. It is an excellent way to meet new families and contribute top the school community.

Terry Fox Run

We had a great time participating in the annual Terry Fox Run last week. It was great to see so many families come out to also participate in the run. We are over 3/4 of our way to our fundraising goal for this year. The fundraising link is still active if families would like to donate online to the Terry Fox Foundation for Cancer Research.

Spanish for Parents

Chinook Learning will be offering Spanish for Parents – Level 1 in the fall.
Course: Spanish for Parents – Level 1
Date: Tuesdays, October 8, 15, 22, 29 & November 5, 19, 26 & December 3
Time: 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM
Location: In-person at Dalhousie School

If there is enough interest from parents, they may also offer a Level 2 course

Circus Residency

From October 7-18, all K-5 students will be participating in a Circus Residency with Green Fools Theatre Company. They will have the opportunity to learn a variety of circus skills led by a professional theatre company. Students will need to wear comfortable clothes that will allow them to easily move and to avoid wearing dangling jewelry during the residency. Parents will be invited to a circus performance in the afternoon of  October 17 or the morning of October 18. Grade 3 and 4 classes will be performing musical numbers to accompany the circus performance. Further details will follow. We are grateful to the Collingwood School Parent Association for their financial support for this residency. We are also pleased to announce that the school has been successful in receiving a grant from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts for this residency.

Commercial Messages

From time to time, the school sends out messages with commercial content, such as fun lunch notices, ordering pictures or special fundraisers. For example, the Parent Association is hosting an exciting new apple fundraiser this fall. In order to receive these emails families need to subscribe to receive commercial messages from the school.
