Collingwood Beekeeper Visit

In Collaboration with Alveole, a bee hive was installed in a secure enclosure on Hockey Hill on the East side of Collingwood School at the end of the 2022-23 school year. Students and families are encouraged to calmly observe the bees coming and going from the hive from the outside of the enclosure. Our first visit from the beekeeper this school year will be on Tuesday September 10 with Sra. Lara’s grade 4 class. Thank you to the Collingwood Parent Association for their financial support for this exciting educational endeavour.

School Council and Parent Association Meetings – Second Wednesday of the Month

Our first school Council and Parent Association meetings will take place at school on Wednesday, September 11 and 6:30 PM and 8:00 PM respectively. These meetings will be in person at the school and online. Join the meeting! The online meetings will be on Microsoft Teams. These meetings are a great opportunity to meet other engaged parents, hear first-hand from school admin about events at school and to share your input and ideas. Please note that we have moved School Council meetings to the second Wednesday of the month rather than on the third Wednesday of the month so that there will not be a conflict with the Senator Patrick Burns meetings.

As an added incentive to attend School Council and Parent Association Meetings, snacks will be provided and babysitting will be available!

Terry Fox Run

Many schools across Canada and around the world hold a Terry Fox Run in the fall to raise awareness about cancer and cancer research. Collingwood School will hold our Terry Fox run on September 12 at 9:50 AM for am kindergarten students and 1:00 PM for PM and grade 1-5 students. Families are encouraged to donate online to the Terry Fox Foundation for Cancer Research. Students and staff will be running and walking around the school field. Families are welcome to come and watch or participate.

In 2023 we raised $2,273.75 and our goal for this year is $2390.00.

Family Picnic

Families are invited to come to the school for a family picnic on Friday September 13 from 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM. Students are dismissed at 12:15, but families may choose to stay and visit at the end of the school day. Bring a picnic lunch and a blanket or lawn chairs and have a picnic with your child. Food trucks have been invited to attend this event. This is an excellent opportunity to meet other Collingwood families. AM and PM Kindergarten students are welcome to attend this event with their families. For those children whose families are unable to attend this event, they will be picnicking with their teachers and friends.

Come to School on Time

On the first day of school, 99% of families arrived on-time and many families were here at 7:45 AM. This demonstrates that it is possible for families to arrive at school on time and find a place to park. We ask families to set up your children for success and continue making arriving at school on time a priority.

Fun Lunch

Our first Fun Lunch of the year will be Subway on September 19 and a reminder that the deadline to order will be Sept. 14 at midnight. Please refer to fun lunch email for more details.

Healthy Start to School

With the return to school and the upcoming flu season please do everything you can to keep your child safe from illness, including the latest coronavirus variant. The CBE takes the health and safety of our students and staff seriously.

In all matters of health, CBE takes direction from Alberta Education and Alberta Health Services. The following health measures can reduce the spread and lessen the impact of illness in school communities. These include:

  • stay home when feeling sick;
  • if possible, avoid close contact with people who are sick;
  • wash hands frequently with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds or use alcohol-based hand sanitizer;
  • cover your cough;
  • avoid touching eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands; and
  • clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces and items at home, especially when someone in your home is sick.

Alberta Health Services has a respiratory assessment tool to provide Albertans with guidance to manage a wide range of respiratory illnesses, and provide advice on caring for symptoms at home, and when to seek additional care.

Personal Mobile Devices

Please note that students are not allowed to use personal mobile devices such as cell phones or smart watches on school grounds unless approved by the teacher for a specific school project. If students bring a cell phone to school it should be kept in their backpack.

Parking and the Drop Off Loop

In the parking lot South of the school, there is a drop off loop which is intended for students who can independently exit the vehicle. Do not exit your vehicle to undo car seats, etc. as if this is required, park along Collingwood Drive or in the visitor parking. Please also be aware that you may be fined or ticketed for parking in the St. Francis Parking Lot.

Volunteers

We will be seeking some support from our school community for a few upcoming events and activities. Processing new Spanish books, picture day volunteers, fun lunch volunteers, donations to a potluck dinner for teachers during conferences, volunteers to run the book fair during conferences. Some of these opportunities will require a police security clearance and others will not. Further details and sign up links will follow.

Conference Booking

Booking for Parent Teacher Conferences will open on Sept 21 at 9:00 AM. Further details will follow. Please also watch for an email from your child’s teacher with a questionnaire about your child’s learning that we need you to complete prior to conferences.

Ongoing Fundraising for Our School

Our Collingwood School website has many different areas you may visit from time to time.  We wanted to highlight a few spots that may help you find information

Fundraisers and Donations

The Fundraisers and Donations page will provide you with up to date information about any Collingwood School fundraisers or Parent Association Fundraisers.  It also explains the process the CBE uses for other donations. Please take a few minutes to check out some of the exciting plans of the Collingwood Parent Association.
