Weekly Update Aug. 28 - Sept. 1 | Welcome, Kindergarten Staggered Entry, Teacher Email, Healthy Start, Picnic, Phones & Watches, Bee Hive
Welcome to the 2023-24 School Year at Escuela Collingwood!
We are looking forward to welcoming students to Collingwood for the upcoming school year. School staff are busy organizing classes and planning for an exciting year.
Please refer to the Back to School Information on the Collingwood School Website for important information about school hours, routines, school supplies, etc.
Kindergarten Staggered Entry
August 31 or September 1 are “staggered entry days for kindergarten students where children will spend a short period of time at school getting to know in smaller groups getting to know some of the school routines. During this time our staff will have the opportunity meet and get to know the children. Final classroom placement decisions will be made on the first regular kindergarten day of school, September 5. At your designated staggered entry time please bring your children to the school gym. Children will go to the classroom with the teachers and we will have a meeting with parents. Bussing for Kindergarten students will start on September 5.
Email from Teachers
All Grade 1-5 families will receive an introductory email from their child’s teacher by 4:00 pm on Wednesday, August 30. This email will have details about where to meet your child’s teacher on the first regular day of school for grades 1-5, Thursday, August 31st. Please communicate with your child’s teacher that morning and ensure that the teacher knows how your child will be getting home, either on the bus or pick up. Please also communicate the bus letter if your child will be taking the bus.
Healthy Start to School
Help ease your children into school routines by reading every day and having an early bedtime . There is a lot of excitement and some nervousness associated with the first day of school and it is important that your children come well rested. Make reading every day an integral part of your nighttime routine to build a love for reading. Be sure to come to school on time every day to set your child up for success.
With the return to school and the upcoming flu season please do everything you can to keep your child safe from illness, including the latest coronavirus variant. The CBE takes the health and safety of our students and staff seriously.
In all matters of health, CBE takes direction from Alberta Education and Alberta Health Services. The following health measures can reduce the spread and lessen the impact of illness in school communities. These include:
- stay home when feeling sick;
- if possible, avoid close contact with people who are sick;
- wash hands frequently with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds or use alcohol-based hand sanitizer;
- cover your cough;
- avoid touching eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands; and
- clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces and items at home, especially when someone in your home is sick.
Alberta Health Services has a respiratory assessment tool to provide Albertans with guidance to manage a wide range of respiratory illnesses, and provide advice on caring for symptoms at home, and when to seek additional care.
Family Picnic
Families are invited to come to the school for a family picnic on Friday September 15 from 11:00- 12:00am. Students are dismissed at 12:15, but families may choose to stay and visit at the end of the school day. Bring a picnic lunch and a blanket or lawn chairs and have a picnic with your child. This is an excellent opportunity to meet other Collingwood families. AM and PM Kindergarten students are welcome to attend this event with their families.
Cell Phones and Smart Watches
Please note that students are not allowed to use cell phones or smart watch recording on school grounds unless approved by the teacher for a specific school project. If students bring a cell phone to school it should be kept in their backpack.
Collingwood Bee Hive
In Collaboration with Alveole, a bee hive was installed in a secure enclosure on the East side of Collingwood School at the end of the 2022-23 school year. Students are encouraged to calmly observe the bees coming and going from the hive from the outside of the enclosure. Further details will be forthcoming about an informational workshop about honey extraction. There will also be a student contest to design a logo for the colony, which we are calling “Abejas Bilingües de Collingwood”. Thank you to the Collingwood Parent Association for their financial support for this exciting educational endeavour.
