Family Literacy Week

This is Family Literacy Week. Please check out the links under Resources for ideas of ways to support literacy learning at home.

Learning an Additional Language

Nearly one third of all students in the Calgary Board of Education are learning English as an additional language. Learning an additional language can help build empathy for the struggles to communicate faced by newcomers. For parents who would like to brush up on their Spanish or embark on a language learning journey, Chinook Learning is offering Spanish for Parents classes starting January 30. See our Parent Resources page.

CBE Dates of Significance Calendar

In the spirit of building a culture of appreciation and inclusion, where students and staff can see themselves valued, respected and celebrated, the CBE has compiled a Dates of Significance Calendar. As we work to make Collingwood School more welcoming and inclusive, it is our hope that this calendar will help build awareness in our school community. https://www.cbe.ab.ca/registration/calendars/Pages/dates-of-significance.aspx The idea of making this calendar more visible emerged at a recent meeting of the Collingwood Parent Diversity Subcommittee.

Collingwood School Council Meeting Jan 24 (6:30 – 8:00 PM)

In person at school and online. In addition to the regular council items, this meeting will feature a presentation by a group of teachers around our School Development Plan Mathematics goal on improvement assessment in numeracy with the new curriculum.

Please note that the date has been moved from Jan 17 to Jan 24.

Report Cards

Report cards will be available for parents to view in MyCBE on January 30.

Visits by Elder Eaglespeaker

Collingwood School has been working for the past several years with Elder Casey Eaglespeaker. He will be returning to Collingwood every month for the remainder of the school year to speak with the students about the 7 Grandfather Teachings. This month he shared Blackfoot perspectives on the value and importance of truth, perseverance and resilience. He will be speaking with different grade groups each visit. We are grateful to the Collingwood Parent Association for making these visits possible.

Animation Residency

All Collingwood students will be working with presenters from the Quickdraw Animation Society for a residency on animation. This residency will build on a variety of drawing skills and for the older students, will culminate in the creation of short animated films. We are grateful to the Collingwood Parent Association for their financial support for this residency.

The Collingwood School Parent Association (CSPA) is launching a Valentine's Day Fundraiser with Rocky Mtn Chocolate.  This will be through the Healthy Hunger website. The last day to order will be Friday February 2 and orders will be delivered and sent home with students February 7/8.

Families who do not have a Healthy Hunger account will need to be create one for this event.  Kindergarten families will need to create a Healthy Hunger account for this fundraising event, however please do not use this account for ordering fun lunches as kindergarteners are not yet eligible for Fun Lunch.  Here are instructions on how to create an account.
