Weekly Update Sept. 25-29 | Orange Shirt Day, Honey Extraction, Milk Program, Volunteers, School Council, Parking and Drop-off

Hola estimadas familias de Collingwood

Estamos profitando del buen tiempo este verano para aprender afuera. Students have been really enjoying the Timbernook Residency and learning outside in the forest with the fall leaves. Thank you to the Collingwood Parent Association for their financial support for this residency. A reminder that the program will run regardless of the weather, so please ensure your children are dressed ready to play and learn outside.

Orange Shirt Day

All students and staff are Collingwood School are invited to participate in Orange Shirt Day on September 28. This day is an opportunity for all people to come together in the spirit of reconciliation. Orange Shirt Day began in 2013 when residential school survivor, Phyllis Webstad, shared how her orange shirt was taken away on her first day at a residential school.

Collingwood students can promote reconciliation in welcoming, caring, respectful, safe, and inclusive school communities by wearing an orange shirt. The intent of this day is to promote inclusion and caring. Do not feel obliged to purchase an orange shirt for your child just for this day.

Honey Extraction Workshop

On September 28 a beekeeper from Alveole will be extracting honey from our Collingwood beehive. This process will be done live in Sr. Pelayo’s classroom and live-streamed for all of our students. We are grateful to the Collingwood Parent Association for their financial support for our bee project.

Milk Program at Collingwood School

We will not be running a milk program at Collingwood School this school year. The CBE has changed the nutritional guidelines and Milk to Go is no longer an approved nutritional item for schools. We were able to run a milk program with the Milk to Go containers because they did not need to be refrigerated and students could seal the cap and bring home unfinished milk. Selling milk in cartons would mean we would need additional staff to rinse out milk containers. Rinsing milk containers in classroom sinks is also problematic s those sinks sometimes back up. Families are welcome to continue to send Milk to Go from home for students.

Leftover Milk Program Tickets

Families who have remaining milk program tickets from last year are asked to write their child’s name on them and children can give them to their lunchroom supervisors by Tuesday, October 3rd. Milk to Go servings will be exchanged for tickets on Thursday, October 5.

Male Swimming Volunteers Needed

Our grade 3/4 classes will be going swimming Oct. 10-13, 2023. We are still in need of a few male volunteers to help out with supervising students on this trip and n the change rooms. If you are available to help, even if your child is not in grade 3 or 4 please check out the sign-up genius link below. Please note there are 2 pages on the link.

Open Positions on the Collingwood School Council and Parent Association

Thank you to the many Collingwood families who attended last week’s School Council and Parent Association meetings in person or online. Now is a great time to take an active role in these organizations and help support the school. Being a part of our School Council and the Parent Association is a great way to get to know families and be directly involved in various capacities at the school such as fundraising, social events, clubs, volunteering and so much more.

There will be several positions open within both organizations this year and they will become available at our next Annual General Meeting (AGM) October 18.
Details for open positions for school council and parent association can be found on the Collingwood School Website .

Traffic Safety

We ask that drivers and pedestrians follow traffic safety rules. This means respecting posted speed limits, using the crosswalk, not parking in the bus zone and refraining from doing u-turns in the school zone.

Drop Off Loop

The drop off loop is reserved for children who can exit the vehicle independently. Please do not exit the vehicle to help with car seats, backpacks, etc. If your child requires assistance please park South of the parking lot. Drivers in the right lane are asked to exit right and drivers in the left lane exit left. We also ask that pedestrians walk through the playground rather than in front of the drop off loop as this helps maintain a smooth flow of traffic through the loop.

Ongoing Fundraising for Our School

Our Collingwood School website has many different areas you may visit from time to time.  We wanted to highlight a few spots that may help you find information.
