Weekly Update Sept. 4-8 | Playground, Air Quality, Health, Picnic, Cellphones/Smart Watches
We hope that families had an enjoyable long weekend and are ready to ease back into the school routine. It was wonderful to meet all of our new kindergarten students last week and see all of the excitement of the first days of school. The first regular day of kindergarten will start on Tuesday, September 5. Bussing for kindergarten will also start on September 5. We know that many of our families choose to drive their children to the first few days of school. To help us with end of day routines please ensure that your child knows if they will be picked up or going on the school bus.
Back to School
Please refer to the Back to School Information on the Collingwood School Website for important information about school hours, routines, school supplies, etc. https://school.cbe.ab.ca/school/collingwood/registration/register/back-to-school/pages/default.aspx
School Playground
During the school day, the playground is reserved for Collingwood students. Some classes use the playground during outdoor breaks or recess times. We also ask that families and students who ride their bikes to school, walk their bikes on school grounds.
Thank you for your understanding.
Air Quality
As Calgary continues to be affected by the wildfire smoke, at Collingwood, we monitor the Alberta Air Quality Index on a daily basis. (https://weather.gc.ca/airquality/pages/provincial_summary/ab_e.html)
If the index is 7 or higher, we have indoor recess and gym activities. Children with asthma or breathing difficulties are asked to inform a staff member if they are feeling unwell and may need to sit out from some physical activities.
Health and Wellness
With the return to school and the upcoming flu season please do everything you can to keep our community safe from illness, including the latest coronavirus variant. The CBE takes the health and safety of our students and staff seriously.
In all matters of health, CBE takes direction from Alberta Education and Alberta Health Services. The following health measures can reduce the spread and lessen the impact of illness in school communities. These include:
- stay home when feeling sick;
- if possible, avoid close contact with people who are sick;
- wash hands frequently with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds or use alcohol-based hand sanitizer;
- cover your cough;
- avoid touching eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands; and
- clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces and items at home, especially when someone in your home is sick.
Alberta Health Services has a respiratory assessment tool to provide Albertans with guidance to manage a wide range of respiratory illnesses, and provide advice on caring for symptoms at home, and when to seek additional care.
Family Picnic
Families are invited to come to the school for a family picnic on Friday September 15 from 11:00- 12:00am. Students are dismissed at 12:15, but families may choose to stay and visit at the end of the school day. Bring a picnic lunch and a blanket or lawn chairs and have a picnic with your child. This is an excellent opportunity to meet other Collingwood families. AM and PM Kindergarten students are welcome to attend this event with their families.
Cell Phones and Smart Watches
Please note that students are not allowed to use cell phones or smart watch recording on school grounds unless approved by the teacher for a specific school project. If students bring a cell phone to school it should be kept in their backpack.
Collingwood Bee Hive
In Collaboration with Alveole, a bee hive was installed in a secure enclosure on the East side of Collingwood School at the end of the 2022-23 school year. Students are encouraged to calmly observe the bees coming and going from the hive from the outside of the enclosure. Further details will be forthcoming about an informational workshop about honey extraction. There will also be a student contest to design a logo for the colony, which we are calling “Abejas Bilingües de Collingwood”. Thank you to the Collingwood Parent Association for their financial support for this exciting educational endeavour.
Ongoing Fundraising for Our School
Our Collingwood School website has many different areas you may visit from time to time. We wanted to highlight a few spots that may help you find information.
